Augusta Concato (Soprano) (Verona 1895 - Carate Brianza 1964)

 

 

 

She studied in Verona with Conti Fioroni and made her debut in 1918 at the Teatro Sociale of Brescia in ‘’La Forza del Destino’’. Already in 1919 she sang at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna the role of Margherita in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito. Two years later she appeared there in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Leggenda di Sakuntala’’ of Alfano. In 1921 Arturo Toscanini engaged her to appear at La Scala in Milan, where she made her debut in 1922 as Giorgetta in Puccini’s ‘’Il Tabarro’’. Here in 1923 she performed in the premiиre of the above-mentioned opera ‘’La Leggenda di Sakuntala’’ of Alfano. She sang also in Rome (Teatro Costanzi 1921, ‘’Aida’’, ‘’Manon Lescaut’’), Turin (Teatro Regio 1920, ‘’Suor Angelica’’), Parma (Teatro Regio 1920, ‘’Loreley’’) and Naples (Teatro San Carlo 1927, ‘’Manon Lescaut’’). In 1924 she made guest appearances in  Australia with an opera troup of Nellie Melba. Here she sang in  ‘’Aida’’ and ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. Her career was marked by guest performances at Monte Carlo, Cairo, Alessandria, Barcelona, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. She was married to the tenor Nino Piccaluga (1890-1973). She retired from the stage approximately in 1938.
