Marcello Govoni (Tenor) (Bologna 1885 - Rome 1944)
He began his career as baritone and made his debut in 1907 at the Teatro Sociale in Casalmaggiore as David in Mascagni’s ‘’L'Amico Fritz’’. Later Govoni switched to tenor making a second debut in 1918 at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna as Werther in Massenet’s ‘’Werther’’. In 1920 he made guest appearance at Covent Garden in London as Ernesto in ‘’Don Pasquale’’ and as Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’. In 1926 he performed at La Scala in Milan as David in ‘’I Maestri cantori di Norimberga’’. In 1927 he founded the Compagnia dell’Opera Comica and began performing with success. In 1929 he was appointed permanent director of the Teatro Reale dell’Opera in Rome and in 1937 he was nominated commissioner of the stage technicians and directors of Rome and its province. He retired from the operatic stage approximately in 1930. His daughter Marcella Govoni had a successful career of soprano.
