Carmelo Alabiso (Tenor) (Nicosia 1886 - Milan 1966)
He was a pupil of the pedagogue Tenaglia. He made his debut in 1913 at the Teatro Sociale in Asola as Rodolfo in ‘’La Boheme’’. In 1914 he sang in Como as Folco in ‘’Isabeau’’ of Mascagni, in 1916 he helped at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in the premiere of Leoncavallo’s opera ‘’Goffredo Mameli’’. From 1918 to 1920 he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome (beginning role: Dick Johnson in Puccini’s ‘’La Fanciulla del West’’) among other things Osaka in ‘’Iris’’ of Mascagni. In 1919 he was to be found at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo where he created the opera ‘’La Vampa’’ of Ravelli. In 1923 he appeared at La Scala in which he debuted as Baldo in the opera ‘’I Compagnacci’’ of Riccitelli; here he sang as Rinuccio in Puccini’s ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’ and as Julien in ‘’Louise’’ of Charpentier under A.Toscanini. In the 1927-28 season he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli. Especially he was liked at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. Here he appeared in 1927 in ‘’Risurrezione’’ of Alfano, in 1929 in Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’, in 1931 in the Puccini’s operas ‘’Il Tabarro’’ and ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’. In 1930 he helped at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo in the première of the opera ‘’Dafni’’ of Giuseppe Mulè. In 1931 he sang at the opera house of Rome again as Folco in ‘’Isabeau’’, his special star role. In 1932 guested in the Italian opera in Holland. Other guest performances in Naples, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Turin, Brescia, Bologna and Verona. In 1934 he picked up his stage career. Then he worked as a pedagogue in Milan.
