Giulio Rossi (Bass) (Rome 1862 – Varese 1934)
He studied singing with Oreste Tomassoni in Rome and made his debut in 1887 in Parma in E. Petrella’s ‘’Jone’’. He soon appeared in the big Italian theaters and already in 1892 sang at La Scala, where in 1894 he performed in the premiere of A. Franchetti’s ‘’Fior d'Alpe’’ and in 1897 in ‘’Il Signor di Pourceaugnac’’ of the same composer. In 1903 he sang at La Scala in concert performance of ‘’Parsifal’’. Already in 1889 he had taken part in a South America tour of the prima donna Adelina Patti; in 1897 he appeared again in South America. Tours led him also to England, Spain and Russia. In 1908 he was appointed to the Metropolitan Opera in New York (debut as king in ‘’Aida’’) and remained their till 1919 appearing also in the Sunday Night Concerts. Here he sang also as Sid in the premiere of Puccini’s ‘’La Fanciulla del West’’ (10. 12. 1910) and in "The Canterbury Pilgrims" of R. de Kovens (1917); he appeared in the American premieres of the operas ‘’La Wally’’ (1909), ‘’Le Donne curiose’’ of Wolf-Ferrari (1910), ‘’Boris Godunov’’ (1913 as Nikitich), ‘’Germania’’ of Franchetti (1910), ‘’L'Oracolo’’ of Leoni (1915) and ‘’Marouf’’ (1917).
