Paolo Wulman (Bass) (Roma 1863 - Milano 1922)
He studied singing in Rome with Ottavio Bartolini and probably made his debur in 1884 at the Teatro Regio in Parma in ‘’Mignon’’. In 1888 he was to be heard at the Politeama Genovese in Genova, where he appeared as Mefistofele in ‘’Faust’’. From 1889 to 1891 he gave guest performances in Montevideo and Lisbon. In 1897 Wilman performed at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. Here he was a partner of Enrico Caruso in ‘’La Gioconda’’. Then he sang in the big Italian stages and took over among other things in 1904 at Scala the part of the king in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’ opposite Giannina Russ, Rose Olitzka, Emilio De Marchi and Riccardo Stracciari. The next year he belonged to the ensemble of the Sonzogno Compagnia, which at the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris gave a sensational performance; here he appeared in ‘’Chopin’’ of Orefice (together with Adelina Stehle-Garbin and Amedeo Bassi). In 1905 he also guested at Covent Garden, London. In 1907 he undertook as a member of the Milan Grand Opera Company a North America tour. During the 1909-10 season he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where also appeared in 1910 in the premiere of Alberto Franchetti's ‘’Germania’’ (with Emmy Destinn and Caruso in the leading roles). Probably his last appearance was at the Politeama Mafalda in Mogliano. After retiring from the stage he devoted himself to teaching.
